an organism that lives in or on an organism of another species (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other's expense:

a person who habitually relies on or exploits others.

This felt perfect. I feel like it describes this interpretation of culture quite well - as being something that lives off of another organism and benefits from it. In addition to this, cordyceps are considered a parasitic fungus .

I settled on the name parasite rather than parasitic because I think it is more bold and more of a statement, whereas I think parasitic is more of a descriptive word.
